This didn't start out as a book, it was initially a private diary of the events during the years she cared for her mother who had dementia. It was part of her survival strategy as looking at the incidents with humour helped. Jane felt that sharing her thoughts might lift the burden of guilt that shadows the minds of many people caring for loved ones with dementia...there is a lot of suffering going on behind closed doors and sharing a laugh about what happens helps to diffuse the tension.
